How to Write an email to Pitch an App to a News Reporter

Writing the email pitch subject line:

Bad Subject Line: App Launch/Review

Good Subject Lines:

PITCH: Word Guessing iOS game, blind friendly, launches in December, beta testing available for Review.

Subject lines (try to keep it all lowercase for friendlyness):

exclusive story for “first name”: “your app launch”

exclusive coverage for: “your app update”

exclusive to “first name”:

Email body structure:

– Write the name of your app exactly as it is spelled on the App Store so that it’s easy for the reporter to search for it, or share it.

– What the app is about, and why it is different, unique feature, selling point.  Tell a story, use adjectives to embellish it.

(if you’re not sure, show it to your friends and family members and watch their reaction)

Social proof:

  • Has any of your past apps been featured in the iTunes app store or google play store?
  • Has you app received any press coverage?
  • Do you have an influencer or a celebrity who talked about the app?
  • Is your app trending on any news sites like Reddit, Google News, Yahoo News, or Product Hunt?
  • If your app does not have any achievements for the pitch, put some of your own achievements. (maybe a past app or software that worked)

– The price or price drop

– One link to your app page (Your website, or a Facebook page)

– One link to the iTunes product page and/or Google Play mobile app

– A few screenshots (as links, not at attachments)

– A short, action-based video (important! This gives the reporter a quick overview of your app) 15 seconds to 45 seconds. (as a link, not as an attachment)

– A description in a small paragraph. That’s where you explain what your app does, what problem it solves, and how it is good at solving it.

– Ways to reach you. An email address and definitely not a link to a contact form or a survey form.

– Optional: Skype IDs, Twitter IDs

Note: The majority of emails won’t be answered. Make sure you follow-up, especially on days where the reporter wouldn’t get that many emails (usually the weekends, not a Monday morning!) The gold lies in the follow-up.

Tips: Use boomerang extension for gmail on Chrome to remind you to send a follow-up email)
